Recently, 4th graders at Central Elementary spent an entire day in the operating room... their classrooms!
Operation day in fourth grade is a celebration of learning about math operations and text structures.
The students have to ‘save patients’ by solving various math problems using all math operations.
Students then have five additional patients that have mysterious symptoms that can be figured out and cured by prescribing the correct text structure to save them.
While all of this is going on, there are sometimes emergencies where students have to solve either math or reading problems, and when done so correctly, they get to take a piece out of an operation game board.
Students really get to show off their understanding of math operations and text structure by saving as many patients as possible throughout the day!
4th grade spends two weeks academically preparing for this final evaluation. Students get to make name tags, doctor folders, and patient charts. Then teachers transformed their classroom to have several ER rooms, and plenty of doctor gear, including medical hats, medical gowns, gloves, masks, etc.
